Research Ideas
Lesson 2 Module 1
Now, I am going to split this section into two. The first section is for people who are new and wants to publish a book to create income but do not have an existing subscriber base. And the second section will be covered on in a later section.
1. Generating Your First Paycheck Through Publishing
Kindle Publishing is relatively simple to get started with. However, it is not a get-rich quick scheme that promises you CASH in an instant but I promise, if you stay consistent in the publishing game, you WILL see results.
If you are reading this section, I assume that you are new to publishing and do not know where to get started. The first thing you need to decide is whether you want to publish fiction or non-fiction. Both of them are great, but for simplicity sake, I am going to focus more on the aspects of non-fiction publishing because this is where I specialize in. Regardless, the strategies that I cover will apply to both.
- Doing Market Research, Selecting a Niche, and a Main Keyword.
This is the MOST important part about Kindle Publishing. Before we begin, let me break down the jargon to you in layman terms.
A market is a broad category on Amazon and a keyword is a specific search term that people type into the search bar.
For example...
Lets focus on the Health Market.
In the health market, there are several NICHES such as weight-loss, anti-aging, diabetes etc.
Keyword: The Main Idea You Want to Convey to the Masses
So basically, you are targeting the market based on their needs. An example of a keyword will be "How to Lose Weight in 21 Days".
As you can see, this is pretty much the Holy Grail of Kindle Publishing and people usually keep this a secret as they do not want anyone to know about techniques to make money online!
Your job is to figure out who your potential customers are as they will try to type a specific search term into Amazon before purchasing your book.
"All niches are profitable, but not all keywords are".
Self-help, Health, Cookbooks, Fitness are some of the largest niches out there on Amazon. This is where the money is at, but it is extremely competitive and you will not be able to make money if you publish a book in there.
An advice will be to list down 20-30 ideas you enjoy doing or have an interest in on a piece of paper and start checking them on Amazon to see which are profitable. If you are having trouble, it means you are not thinking hard enough. Look around your house, think back of a sport you like to play and you may come up with a PROFITABLE keyword that SELLS.
Remember, be unique and don't follow the masses.
- How Do You Determine Whether a Keyword is Profitable?
This part is pretty straightforward. Firstly, you will need to get an Extension on Google Chrome known as "DS Amazon Quick View" (it's FREE).
As you can see, there will be a new function which indicates the # paid in Kindle Store.
This is known as the Best Selling Rank (BSR).
To determine if a keyword is profitable, the first 6 books of the particular keyword you enter into the search bar must be below #100,000.
This means that the person is selling at least 1 book per day! (The lower, the better).
If all 6 books are below #100,000...
Congrats! You have found yourself a profitable keyword.
Another criteria is that the search results (seen at the top left of the image) must be between 500 - 1000. You wouldn't want a huge number as your book will be buried beneath thousands of other books.
Take the search term "Meditation", the keyword is profitable, however, it is far too competitive and you wouldn't want to publish your book in there.
To sum it all up, here are the two main takeaways:
1) Find keywords that has the FIRST SIX BOOKS with BSR below #100,000.
2) Search results must be between 500-1000.
These two criterias must be MET first before you can deem a keyword profitable.
Once you have done that, the next step will be to name your book! How do you do that?
Title of Book:
Main Keyword + Subtitle
An example for this will be:
Sous Vide Cookbook: 101 Delicious and Mouth-Watering Recipes You Can Use To Cook Scrumptious Meals for Your Family.
In this case, Sous Vide Cookbook will be your profitable keyword and the subtitle has to be persuasive enough so that it will attract readers!
Description of Your Book
People do read the description of your book. Basically, your description must summarize the main points of your book and PERSUADE the viewer to buy.
You need to give them the benefits of why they need YOUR book.
Tip: Instead of listing down the features of your book, write the benefits down and how they will help the reader. Don't be long-winded. Short and simple, straight to the point works fairly well unless you are in the Fiction Niche, where you have to evoke curiosity or other emotions!
You can use the Amazon Description Generator Tool to help you get started.
